CLINICAL PILATES ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE OSTEOPATHY ORTHOTICS NUTRITION PRACTITIONERS

Welcome to the Physio Therapy Centre

Therapies available include Physiotherapy, Podiatry/Chiropody, Acupuncture, Clinical Pilates, Alexander Technique and Sports Massage.

We offer fast access to high quality treatments and therapies.

Contact us for private consultancy in friendly surroundings, at a time to suit you - in Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill.

Our clinical staff are fully qualified and include Chartered and State Registered Physiotherapists. They all offer a thorough professional assessment and effective treatment, in a relaxed and comfortable environment.

Physiotherapy

We are a dedicated team of physiotherapists with specialist training in the nervous, muscular and skeletal system. We have all undergone the required training and passed all the necessary state-recognised examinations.

We are trained to treat the whole body by correcting and improving the body's own natural healing mechanisms.

Treatment by physiotherapy aims at the facilitation and restoration of movement and function.

Physiotherapy can play a vital role in pain relief, healing and rehabilitation in most medical and surgical conditions.

Among the conditions we treat are:
  • spinal problems
  • joint problems
  • injuries
  • fractures
  • obstetrics and gynaecological
  • posture

How do we treat these conditions?
  • specific manipulation
  • passive mobilisation of joints
  • massage
  • motivation
  • exercises
  • rehabilitation
  • clinical pilates
  • hydrotherapy
  • other soft tissue techniques
  • preventative medicine to avoid recurrence
  • electrotherapy
All the above help with the relief of pain and the promotion of recovery

How do we decide the best form of treatment for you?

Treatment cannot begin without a diagnosis. Your physiotherapist will examine the nature and actual site of the problem and relate it to you as an individual. After a full consultation with you, your physiotherapist will decide on the best form of treatment.

How do we prevent re-occurrence?

Specific self-help exercise programmes are suggested to maintain your improvement. This could include involvement in one of our clinical pilates classes, individual instruction, or exercises that you can do at home.

Do I need to consult my doctor?

Not necessarily. You may consult a physiotherapist without a doctors referral.

However, if you are claiming on medical insurance, you must consult with your insurance company before treatment.

Chiropody & Podiatry

Offering treatment to all age groups, from babies and children through adults and the elderly, and specialising in all foot problems relating to activities:- running sports, hiking and walking.

Treatment includes a biomechanical assessment, where the joint range of motion will be measured and gait pattern studied. If necessary a foot cast is taken and sent to an orthotic laboratory along with the prescription form. It takes about three weeks for the orthoses to be made. Patients are also given an exercise programme, if necessary.

Among other treatments offered are effective relief from:

In-growing toenails.

These are easily treated while recurrent in-growing nails may benefit from minor surgery. This is carried out under a local anaesthetic and the recovery period is usually between four and eight weeks.

Fungal infections

Many types of fungi can infect the feet. A specimen of the affected skin or nail is for analysis by a pathology laboratory before advice is given on the most appropriate course of treatment.

Verrucae

Also known as plantar warts. These are caused by a virus and can be difficult to treat. However, there are effective treatments available including homeopathic, herbal and chemical.

Corns and callous

These form on the feet as a protective mechanism, but excessive callous can be painful. Corns form over and under an area of pressure and friction. They are a generally a symptom of walking problems although can be caused by ill- fitting shoes.

Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the gentle insertion of hair-fine needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the flow of Qi (pronounced chee), or natural healing energy.

How can Acupuncture help?

Acupuncture can be effective in a wide variety of conditions through its power to stimulate our own healing response.

Acupuncture often excels in those areas in which conventional medicine comes up short. Chronic disease, pain control, and stress-related disorders are just three specialties.

Acupuncture treatment may be used along with other medical care to great advantage. It has been used for pain control after other medical or dental procedures, for improving healing, and to lessen the side-effects of some drugs, including chemotherapy.

What to expect

Your initial visit will last for about 75-90 minutes and will include a treatment. Harry will gather information on your symptoms and your treatment to date: your medical and family history; your systems or functions (eg sleep, appetite, digestion etc.); your physical condition, (eg distribution of body heat and the condition of your skin), take your pulse and look at your tongue. Subsequent visits take 45 minutes.

Treatment is the process of re-establishing the energy balance, stimulating or reducing the flow of energy in a specific pathway.

Acupuncture is drug-free so you avoid side effects or dependency.

Does it hurt?

Most people are surprised to learn that acupuncture needles are very thin. As many as fifteen acupuncture needles can fit into one conventional hypodermic needle.

Acupuncturists attain a high level of skill in gently placing these tiny needles into the skin with a minimum of discomfort

Treatments

Acupuncture is not a miracle cure, but a gentle and effective therapy which, for best results, requires a course of treatment.

Generally you will come weekly to begin with and then, as you improve, you will come less frequently. The speed of improvement varies more according to the individual than the label of the complaint.

Clinical Pilates

What is Pilates

Pilates is a unique exercise system developed by Joseph Pilates over 70 years ago to treat injuries of those in the performing arts. Over time, his method has been refined and become more popular with the general public.

Clinical Pilates is a modification of Traditional Pilates and has been developed by physiotherapists in keeping with current research findings and existing rehabilitation techniques.

How is Pilates performed

The emphasis is on control of the deep stabilising muscles of the trunk which support the spine, thereby reducing postural pain, enhancing efficiency of movement and improving overall well being.

The exercises in Clinical Pilates are performed in a precise and fluid manner, which, combined with breathing produce improved posture and patterns of movement.

At the Physio Therapy Centre we teach clinical pilates either on a 1-1 basis or in a small class. For class details please ring Nikki on 07980311830.

Alexander Technique

The Alexander Technique is a simple and practical method of learning to be poised and to move easily without stiffness or unnecessary effort. It improves coordination, breathing and performance.

Learning the Alexander Technique can help prevent or alleviate conditions associated with undue tension or poor posture. It supports rehabilitation following injury or illness, and teaches management of stress and pain.

Through its emphasis on teaching self-awareness and providing the tools to change unhelpful habits, it enhances performance and effectiveness at work as well as in sports and the performing arts.

Lessons are on a one-to-one basis and the number of lessons required depends on the individual.

In a lesson the teacher uses explanation and a gentle guiding touch to encourage a letting go of unnecessary effort and a gradual change of unhelpful postural habits and ways of moving.

To book a lesson contact Korina on 01273 420 259.

Nathalie Patey BA, MA, DNN

Nathalie stumbled upon good nutrition and its resulting effects on health and behaviour when she became an au-pair aged 18, in a vegan family in Boston, USA. Having been raised in France on a diet of baguette, pasta, cheese and fresh produce, she adopted her new family diet wholeheartedly and subsequently lost weight and felt renewed energy, had clearer skin and felt very healthy. She also noticed the effect of their diet on the children of the family, at the time 6 and 9 years old. She had never before met such polite, balanced, calm and bright children - and she put it down to what they did and did not eat!
Later having her own children further raised her interest in nutrition, particularly when her first-born boy developed serious eczema as a baby and food allergies. Her interest became a personal quest to find the right foods and natural remedies to rid him of his facial eczema and now believes that she cured him through natural remedies and proper nutrition. Her ‘quest’ for health later led her to give up her marketing career to study and qualify as a nutritionist with the College of Natural Nutrition.
