Welcome to The Mindful Sage

Karen Harris is a Breathworks accredited Mindfulness Trainer, teaching compassionate mindfulness techniques to those living with long term health conditions, chronic pain, anxiety, sleeplessness, stress and depression..

Karen worked as a qualified nurse for many years in various areas within the NHS and also in private healthcare. She discovered mindfulness over 4 years ago and it had a profound impact on her personal well-being. Wanting to share this with others, Karen trained with the Breathworks organization for 18 months in order to teach mindfulness techniques to others ldealing with a variety of difficulties in life .

Mindfulness techniques can be used to relieve chronic pain and the symptoms of stress, anxiety, insomnia and long term health conditions. It has been shown to increase your sense of well-being. I teach mindfulness on a one to one basis, where we work at a pace to suit you. I teach in quiet therapy rooms in Ilminster or central Taunton. I can visit you at home if you are unable to attend my therapy rooms.

If you prefer, you can join a group course which I currently run in South Molton, Taunton and Donyatt, near Ilminster. For futher details, please view my website, www.themindfulsage.co.uk

Mindfulness is a life skill that, once learned, can be applied to difficult situations in life. 'Mindfulness for Health' is an 8 week course in mindfulness skills and compassion to empower you to be able to manage your health issues and be more proactive in dealing with your difficulties.

Karen teaches mindfulness techniques that can be built into a tool kit of strategies, attitudes and practices to empower you to cope with difficulties in life. This can improve your quality of life and will increase your sense of well-being.

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a life skill which we can use to develop our awareness. We do this through training our brains to think differently and use both formal practices – such as meditation – as well as informal practices – such as taking 5 minutes to just watch the sky or listen to the birds. Training the brain to respond differently to difficulties has been shown to reduce stress and helps those who have long term pain or illness to achieve a sense of wellbeing and improves the quality of life available.

Mindfulness for Health also teaches methods of pacing that can be used to enable those living with pain and conditions that restrict their lives to achieve a better balance between activity and rest. It is a unique programme combining Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) with Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). The resulting programme is known as Mindfulness Based Pain Management and was developed by Vidyamala Burch as a response to her own chronic pain and disability.

Since the development of mindfulness programmes by Jon Kabat-Zinn in the US and Mark Williams in the UK, much research has been done that shows developing mindfulness in our daily lives enables us to make the necessary changes to improve our experiences. We are able to change from reacting to negative experiences to choosing how to respond to them by practising mindfulness techniques learned during an 8 week mindfulness course.

Eight week Mindfulness for Health Course

A course introducing both formal & informal mindfulness practices, the use of an activity diary and teaching on pacing guidelines to improve quality of life and sense of wellbeing.

Mindful meditation in the Mindfulness for Health programme is done for 10 minutes twice daily, with guidance from a CD. You do not have to empty your mind to meditate, merely focus your awareness on the sensations of the breath in the body. The CDs will guide your attention during the meditations although eventually you may feel that you no longer need to use them. We also emphasise the importance of informal practices, such as once or twice a day watching a kettle boil when making a cup of tea, paying attention to the smells, sounds and sensations as you go through the process, or perhaps taking five minutes to sit and watch the sky, noticing how the clouds change from moment to moment.

A limited number of concessions are available on each course at my discretion for those receiving benefits or on low wages. These places are likely to fill more quickly. Please contact me for details.

Cost: £210
