Herbal and Nutritional Medicine
Sarah Firnberg BA(hons), BSc CPP MNIMH Medical Herbalist
Herbal medicine has been used safely and effectively throughout the world for thousands of years and modern Medical Herbalists, with the benefits of scientific research as well as a wealth of traditional knowledge, bring this tradition into the 21st century.
Medical herbalists are trained to degree level in the orthodox medical sciences as well as nutrition and clinical examination skills, and they are able to offer really safe and effective treatment for most conditions. Herbalists are happy to work independently or alongside your doctor, often reducing the need for prescription drugs.
The real strengths of Medical Herbalism lie in the compatibility of herbal constituents with the human body and the holistic style of treatment.
This means that herbalists will always explore and address the underlying causes of your condition, as well as the symptoms, as we believe this is the only way to really overcome disease and regain good health. Herbs and nutrition will be used to strengthen and support your own healing mechanisms as well as to address symptoms.
Herbs are extremely safe in the hands of a qualified practitioner and side effects are very rare and short lasting.
Sarah Firnberg is a qualified medical herbalist, living and working in Birmingham. "I am fascinated by the complexity of disease and in awe of the wealth of natural healing resources we can call upon"
There's a lot more to herbalism than herbs . . . .
Why visit a herbalist?
♣ Western Medical Herbalism, administered by qualified practitioners, is really safe and effective, with rare side-effects. It may be taken alongside orthodox drugs, or used as a valuable alternative.
♣ There is more to herbalism than herbs alone. Medical Herbalism is a holistic therapy, which means that not only will the herbalist consider you as a whole person, exploring every angle of your health, but also, herbalists are qualified to advise on other aspects of your treatment, such as nutrition (in fact this is an important aspect of treatment) and stress relief.
♣ Herbal medicine can often reduce your need of orthodox drugs and thus reduce harmful side-effects.
♣ By exploring and treating the underlying causes of disease, Medical herbalists will not only reduce your symptoms, but they can help also you overcome, or gain long term improvement, for your condition.
♣ Herbalists are trained to degree level in the orthodox medical sciences. They are happy to treat any condition you would take to your GP, and they are trained to refer you on for further investigation where necessary.
♣ Herbalists work holistically, so every aspect of your health will be taken into account, including your nutritional status and lifestyle.
♣ You will be really listened to and treatment will be tailored specifically to your personal needs.
♣ Herbalists work with, rather than against the body, so your body's natural healing mechanisms will be strengthened and supported.
♣ In the hands of a professional Western Medical Herbalist, herbs are extremely safe and reliable. Only herbs of the highest quality are used and these are constantly monitored for consistency and purity.

I normally take your pulse and blood pressure and I may examine you if appropriate. I usually like to see patients again about two weeks after their first appointment, however, after that, depending on the condition, I see patients once every 4 to 6 weeks until we feel this is no longer necessary.
