What is aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is a therapy used to alleviate physical and mental stresses with the use of essential oils and other aromatic substances of plant origin. It is an ancient art dating back to the ancient Romans and Greeks, and is today one of the fastest growing complementary therapies in hospitals and hospices.

Essential oils are powerful substances contained within a plant packed full of all the enzymes and nutrients essential to that plants life. In the plant they are mostly used for defensive or reproductive purposes, and their chemical composition gives them particular characteristics that identify them as being antiviral, analgesic, hormone balancing and so on, in varying degrees according to the plant. The aromatherapist uses these differences in chemical make-up to produce blends tailored to the individuals requirements. They are often applied in massage but can also be used with burners/vapourisers, inhalations, in the bath, in creams and lotions etc, according to the needs of the individual.

Aromatherapy massage tends to be gentle and rhythmical, using deep pressures when appropriate, to encourage muscle fibres to relax and elongate. It is about ‘persuading’ the body and mind to relax rather than being forceful.

Testimonials

“ I recently suffered from an extremely painful muscle spasm in my shoulder which was unbearable…….Karen…….pinpointed the source of the problem on my first visit. After one treatment I began to feel relief and gained mobility. This improved over my course of treatment and I now have full range of movement and no pain! “

"For several months my aches and pains in joints and muscles steadily became worse. I have now been six times, generally on a monthly basis and the result has been remarkable. The aches and pains are considerably better and in fact they have almost gone completely. I cannot speak too highly of Karen's ability to specify soothing essential oils and provide the massage to give a feeling of well-being and I would recommend her to anyone suffering from similar problems. About Karen

I was originally trained in Human Resource Management but not really finding it very fulfilling, so when I found enormous relief from visiting an aromatherapy practitioner myself for a traumatic event in my life my curiosity was aroused.

On finding out more about aromatherapy I had that ‘light bulb’ moment when I knew this was what I wanted to do. I trained with the Tisserand Institute at the Royal Masonic Hospital in London and graduated in 1994.

Since then I have been undergoing continual development as part of my membership of the International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists and have developed as a Clinical Aromatherapist in private practice, as well as working with Multiple Sclerosis groups and, for the last four years, with cancer patients. I have worked as an aromatherapist with Wallace Cancer Care in Cambridge affiliated to Addenbrookes Hospital working with people from diagnosis onwards, and am currently working with Arthur Rank Hospice, Cambridge visiting patients at home.

I also qualified with the Diploma in Complementary Therapies in Cancer and Supportive Care (Aromatherapy) at the Christie Hospital in Manchester June 2011.
