Psychotherapy and Counselling

Why psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy offers an opportunity to discover a way forward from any difficult or painful point in life. A welcoming space and non judgmental support provides a means to express and release feelings, increase confidence and self-esteem and to work through challenging situations, life crisis and change. Also, specific problems can be helped such as anxiety, abuse, panic attacks, relationship problems, eating disorders, bereavement, depression and physical ill health.

Core Process Psychotherapy is an experiential approach that encompasses our feelings, emotions, sensations, mental processes and their expression in the body. As a depth psychotherapy rooted in awareness and mindfullness, and at the same time integrating Western Psychotherapeutic skills and practices, the Core Process approach works in the context of a therapeutic alliance that welcomes the whole person as well as addressing 'issues'.

What next?

The first meeting is free and lasts for half an hour. This gives you an opportunity to describe what you would like to get out of coming to therapy at this time, and to ask any questions that you may have about my approach, training or qualifications.

I normally suggest that we both take time to reflect on whether I am the right person, but if it feels right to start then we will arrange the first few sessions.I suggest that we work for six sessions in the first instance and then review the work and perhaps decide to work longer term.

About me

I have sixteen years previous experience as a psychologial therapist, manager and senior practitioner in NHS mental health services.I have supported people through traumatic life events, childhood sexual abuse, bereavement following suicide and homicide, post-natal depression and other emotional and significant mental health difficulties.I am currently supporting women in the field of rape crisis and sexual abuse.

I bring a wealth of understanding and experience to help you work through your issues and experiences. There is not a lot that will shock me, I am familiar with working with extreme difficulty and trauma.

I have a Masters Degree in Psychotherapy and as an accredited Core Process Psychotherapist registered with the UK council for psychotherapy, I am able to offer psychotherapy on a short or long term basis.

I have been interested in one to one therapeutic work throughout my working life and am also qualified in cognitive behavioural psychotherapy, dramatherapy and have undertaken extensive training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy.I have a special interest in working with people in crisis and the effects of shock and trauma from a body/mind perspective.

To balance this I am supported by a yoga practice, children, horses a whippet and two terrier dogs who remind me to live in the present moment, and to laugh at life.

I offer a confidential, clear and contained space for reflection, deep listening, respect and welcome for whatever it is that you wish to explore.

My practice is governed by the ethical framework defined by the UKCP and the Karuna Institute, which includes strict guidelines on confidentiality and ensures competent practice through professional supervision.

My fees currently range from £30-£40 per hour according to the client's income. However, I dedicate an area of my clinical practice to people who have, or are experiencing significant shock and trauma in their lives such as a sudden death in the family in tragic circumstances or adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse who require support to process overwhelming feelings and anxiety.I offer a much reduced fee for a few people in receipt of welfare benefit or on a very low income.

I have clinical practices in central Exeter, Tavistock and near Launceston. My practice on the edge of Bodmin Moor in Cornwall is surrounded by ancient granite tors, old settlements and lovely scenery on our smallholding and of the surrounding Cornish Moors. The practice is two miles from the A30, close to Bodmin and Launceston and also accessible from Truro and Exeter via the M5 or A30.There is ground floor access and plenty of parking space. The practice is near to the Rising Sun Inn, a 16th century moorland inn, and for walks the dramatic Rough Tor rises at 1,300 ft nearby.

Bodmin Moor is one of the last great unspoilt areas in the South West and much of its prehistoric and medieval past remains untouched by the passing of centuries.Historically Bodmin Moor was a landscape which engendered awe and mystery, but which has also provided inspiration for writers, poets, artists and sculptors. It has generated folklore and legend, a rich base for a psychotherapeutic journey to commence.
