What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is an established system of clinical diagnosis and manual treatment in which a caring approach to the patient and attention to individual needs are of primary importance.

In particular, it is concerned with the inter-relationship between the structure of the body and the way in which it functions and is therefore an appropriate form of therapy for many problems affecting the neuro-musculo-skeletal systems.

Osteopathy is a way of detecting and treating damaged parts of the body such as muscles, ligaments, nerves and joints. When the body is balanced and efficient, just like a well tuned engine, it will function with the minimum of wear and tear, leaving more energy for living.

What is Seifukujitsu?

Seifukujitsu is a term derived from three Chinese characters that mean "whole and complete" + "to recover what was lost" + "skilled art or method."

The Japanese translation of seifukujitsu is "a skillful method of adjusting and restoring.

From an energy standpoint, seifukujitsu methods imply techniques to straighten up the hara or to adjust internal energy. These time proven methods of seifukujitsu also can be said to "break down the old and build up the new. In old Japan, martial art sensei used seifukujitsu to deal with various muscle, tendon and bone injuries that occurred during training.

The healing techniques of seifukujitsu have been practiced in Japan for over twelve hundred years. Although many people mistakenly believe that seifukujitsu is limited to restorative massage, it actually includes treatment for sprains, strains and non-displaced fractures.

What is Kinesiotaping?

The Kinesio Taping Method involves taping over and around muscles in order to assist and give support or to prevent over-contraction. The first technique gives the practitioner the opportunity to actually give support while maintaining full range of motion, enabling the individual to participate in physical activity with functional assistance. The second technique helps prevent overuse or over-contraction and helps provide facilitation of lymph flow 24 hours per day. It is most commonly used in the acute stage of rehabilitation. Correctional techniques include mechanical, lymphatic, ligament / tendon, fascia, space, and functional. Kinesio Tex Tape can be used in conjunction with other therapies, including cryotherapy, hydrotherapy, massage therapy, and electrical stimulation.

Kinesio Taping affects the activation of the neurological system, the body’s information processor, and the circulatory system. Muscles are not only attributed to the movements of the body but they also control the circulation of venous and lymph flows, body temperature, etc. Therefore, the failure of the muscles to function properly induces various kinds of symptoms. Consequently, so much attention was given to the importance of muscle function that the idea of treating the muscles in order to activate the body's own healing process came about. Using an elastic tape, it was discovered that muscles and other tissues could be helped by outside assistance. Employment of Kinesio Taping creates a totally new approach to treating nerves, muscles, and organs.

Practitioners

Simon Irwin

Simon comes from a family with strong medical roots. With generations of the family becoming nurses, doctors and surgeons, he showed an affinity for working with his hands from an early age, taking up massage as an amateur to help his mother with her back complaints in his preteen years.

After finishing his A-Levels Simon studied Human Biology at Loughborough University, during which time he played various sports including Rugby, American Football and Martial Arts, taking full advantage of the University’s sports facilities. While there he was a member of the Loughborough Aces American Football team which won the national championships, and was then chosen to represent the North of Britain internationally against a USA touring side.

One degree under his belt, Simon chose to follow his dream of becoming an Osteopath and enrolled at the British School Of Osteopathy. During his four year degree Simon spent time working in the School’s expectant mother and homeless clinics, as well as becoming the Student Union President for a Year. While there he also began training in Kodenkan Danzan Ryu Ju-Jitsu under Sensei Stephen Nicholls, included in which was the use of Seifukujitsu - a traditional Japanese healing art. Simon currently holds the rank of 1st Dan (Shodan) and teaches at the Tetsu Tori Dojo in Gatwick.

Graduating in 2003 Simon quickly settled into private practice where he continues to enjoy treating his patients who have, over the years, included Politicians, Television Stars, Premiership Rugby Players, Business Leaders, Dancers, housewives, the elderly and many more…

In 2007 Simon embarked upon a new and exciting part of his Osteopathic career, with the launch of Irwin Osteopathy in Leatherhead, an area he has lived in for years and has grown to love. It was only natural that this is where he should choose to take root for the rest of his professional career.
