About Traditional Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a healthcare system based on ancient understanding and techniques.

Acupuncture has a very positive model of good health and function; it looks at pain and illness as signs that the body is out of balance. The overall aim of Acupuncture treatment is to restore the body’s equilibrium. What makes this system so uniquely suited to modern life is that the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects a person are seen as interdependent.

Acupuncturists are trained to use diagnostic techniques that are based on traditional beliefs and have been developed and refined for centuries. The focus is on you as an individual, not your illness, and all the symptoms are seen in relation to each other. Each patient is unique; two people with the same western diagnosis may well receive different Acupuncture treatments.

Acupuncturists believe that the underlying principle of treatment is that illness and pain occur when the body’s Qi (pronounced ‘chee’), or vital energy, cannot flow freely. There can be many reasons for this; emotional and physical stress, poor nutrition, infection or injury are among the most common. By inserting ultra-fine, sterile, disposable needles into specific Acupuncture points, a traditional acupuncturist seeks to re-establish the free flow of Qi to restore balance and trigger the body’s natural healing response.

About Facial Enhancement Acupuncture

Facial Enhancement Acupuncture is a cosmetic treatment

What is it?
Facial Enhancement Acupuncture is not the latest fad or new thing on the market. It has, in fact, been practiced in China for thousands of years. It is acupuncture on points of the face to stimulate the meridians and, therefore, improve muscle tone and skin contraction; this in turn helps to eliminate fine lines and wrinkles. The treatment also reduces the sagging jowls and helps to eliminate puffiness by improving the metabolism - the skin circulation is greatly improved and this helps even out colour tone and tightens the pores. As the treatment is totally natural and is working with the body's energy, the patient will feel revitalized all over and their general sense of well being will be improved - this is a fantastic alternative to medical and chemical treatments.

What is involved?
Improvements can be evident after the first treatment, although significant improvements are usually clearer after you have received a number of treatments. It is completely up to you how many treatments you would like, you may decide you would like a few treatments during the build up to a special occasion, or you may want to embark on regular treatments throughout the year, it’s up to you.

Does it hurt?
The needles that are used for acupuncture are very fine disposable needles. There is very little sensation when needled with them and only a mild stinging sensation may be experienced on some occasions, in fact, the whole experience of a treatment can be very relaxing in itself.

I am a member of Cosmetic Acupuncture UK - the professional practitioner network for Facial Enhancement Acupuncture

About Me

Hello, my name is Dee Holbourne. I am a fully qualified acupuncturist.

I would describe myself as having a professional and enthusiastic approach to caring for people who want to make changes to their health situation. I use Acupuncture and supplementary Chinese Medicine techniques. My philosophy is to work collaboratively with patients, this will involve discussing how lifestyle and dietary changes can support treatment.

I enjoy treating people with all sorts of complaints and I have a particular interest in mental and emotional health care.

My passion for Acupuncture began when I received treatment from my local traditional acupuncturist and was impressed by the results and my improved quality of life - this is why my clinic is named Inspiration Acupuncture. I wanted to help other people in the same way and decided to train to become a practitioner.

I undertook extensive training at the internationally renowned College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in Reading, where I studied for four years to gain a Bsc (Hons) in Acupuncture and was granted a Licentuate of Acupuncture.

I have done further training to become a Facial Enhancement Acupuncturist. And I am a member of Cosmetic Acupuncture UK - the professional practitioner network for Facial Enhancement Acupuncture.

I continue to build on my training through Continued Professional Development, attending additional training, seminars and conferences. I attend on-going professional clinical supervision sessions to help me reflect on my practice and grow as a practitioner.

I am a member of the British Acupuncture Council which is the largest regulatory body for acupuncturists in the UK. I am upheld by their strict professional code of conduct and safe practices. I am on a voluntary register that has been accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

I am licensed to practise by Sedgemoor district council and South Somerset district council; I have a Certificate of Registration to carry on the practice of Acupuncture. I am on the data protection register.

Prior to becoming an acupuncturist I worked as a Registered Mental Health Nurse for over 10 years. I trained at The Florence Nightingale School of Nursing at Kings College London and worked in both in-patient and community settings. My interest in mental health originated during my studies which led to a bachelors degree in Psychology. These experiences have helped me in my practice as an acupuncturist to talk to patients about every aspect of their health and care.

The experience of having treatment

What should you expect when you come for treatment?

Please let reception know that you have arrived to see me. I will come and collect you from the reception area and introduce myself to you - My name is Dee Holbourne.

During your first visit we will split our time between gathering information and giving you a treatment.

I will need to gain a thorough understanding of your how you hope treatment will help you and your general health and lifestyle. This involves asking questions about your current symptoms and your medical history, as well as such things as your sleeping pattern, your appetite and digestion, and your emotional wellbeing. Women are also asked about their menstrual cycle and any past pregnancies and childbirth.

You might feel that some questions appear unrelated to your condition but the information you give helps me to form a more complete picture of your health and lifestyle.

We may have discussed your questions on the phone during your free 15 minute telephone consultation, but there will also be a chance to ask questions during the treatment session.

When talking about your main complaint, I may ask you to describe in your own words what the symptoms feel like and how severe they are. You may also be asked how long you have been having the symptoms, whether they are constant or intermittent and how frequent they are. You should mention any medication that you are taking and whether you have tried any other therapies.

Your treatment will vary depending on if you are coming to have Traditional Acupuncture or Facial Enhancement Acupuncture.

As part of your diagnosis, I will also feel your pulses on both wrists and ask to look at your tongue
I may feel for feel areas of muscular tension or pain.

Acupuncture treatment: I will use very fine single-use pre-sterilised needles to stimulate specific Acupuncture points on your body. Because energy meridians range across the whole body, the points used are not necessarily close to where you experience pain or discomfort. For example, if you suffer from headaches needles might be inserted in your foot or hand.

Other techniques
- Moxa: I may also use other techniques such as moxa: heat is applied to an Acupuncture point or meridian using moxa (a therapeutic herb) to warm and relax muscles and qi.

- Tuina: Chinese therapeutic massage relieves muscle tension, stimulates acupressure points, opens energy meridians and stimulate the flow of qi.

- Cupping: glass cups with a vacuum seal are placed on the skin to stimulate blood flow and clear stagnant qi.

- ElectroAcupuncture: small electrodes are attached to the needles to create stronger stimulation.

- Neuromuscular taping: tape is applied to the body to stimulate its own healing. Muscles also control both blood circulation and lymphatic function which in turn impact body temperature, pain etc.

- Advice: I am likely to suggest ways in which you can enhance the long-term effects of your treatment. This may involve making changes to your diet and daily routine. If necessary you will be referred to other healthcare practitioners for specialist care.

After effects: Most people find Acupuncture relaxing and often feel very calm after a treatment. You may feel a little tired or sleepy and should take this into account if you are planning to drive or use heavy machinery straight after your treatment.

You should refrain from vigorous exercise after treatment and, ideally, give yourself a little time to rest. It is also advisable not to drink alcohol for several hours after treatment.
Acupuncture has very few side effects and any that do occur are usually mild and self-correcting. Cupping and guasha can sometimes temporarily mark the skin. Such bruising is painless and generally clears within a day or two.

Before you go we will talk about your future treatments and the advice you have been given.
I will take you back to the reception area.
