Healthy Roots Community Acupuncture Clinic in Cookham, Berkshire
We are passionate about helping improve the health and wellbeing of our patients. Knowing how effective acupuncture is, we are dedicated to making acupuncture affordable for everyone so that the whole community can benefit from it.

We are called ‘Healthy Roots’ because we want to strengthen the root of a person and in that way, all the different branches such as body, soul and spirit will thrive. Western medicine tries to heal the symptoms of an illness. Acupuncture is a branch of Chinese Medicine which is focused on finding the cause (or the root) of illness rather than focusing on the symptoms which manifest because of the illness.

The Team
Therese (Tess) Rodhammar

Hi! My name is Therese (Tess) Rodhammar and I originally graduated from “The Southern School for Chinese Medicine” in Sweden. I then decided that I wanted more knowledge and came to the UK to get a degree in Acupuncture BSc (Hons) at CICM. I have since I was very young always been interested in complementary medicine and the holistic way of thinking. I love the way acupuncture is treating the body, mind and spirit as a whole and that everything is connected. Apart from acupuncture, I also feel passionate about travelling, music, dancing and just surrounding myself with wonderful people in life. For me life is about growing, learning and enjoying every day as much as I can. If I can help people feel greater wellbeing in their lives, then I have reached one of my goals.

Padma Panigrahi

Hello. My name is Padma Panigrahi. I started my working life as a Solicitor. My journey into acupcunture started when I did my yoga teacher training course in India. The course focused on the natural energy that flows through our body. Through the practice of yoga and breathing I soon realised just how naturally powerful our body and mind is, without the need for any medication. Having experienced this I decided that I wanted to train to be an acupuncturist. Acupuncture allows the body to heal itself. The results are amazing!

Inna Young

Hi, I am Inna. I was born and grew up in Russia. I trained and worked as an environmental engineer until I became interested in Reflexology. The more I learnt the more I became interested in other aspects of Chinese Medicine. Understanding Acupuncture has changed my view of life's values. I now appreciate the quality of life if you are healthy in body and soul. I cherish Every minute with my patients , it is amazing what change Acupuncture can make to the most common "difficult" condition. I am dedicated the rest of my life to bring difference in my patients wellbeing.

Multibed Clinics
A multibed clinic means that several people are treated at the same time in a large room. This is a common way of treating people in the Far East but it is still a fairly new way of treating here in the West. The number of Multibed clinics in England are increasing due to the demand for affordable acupuncture. By treating more people at the same time, the costs can be kept low and this means that the treatments are cheaper. The great thing with being able to offer affordable acupuncture is that people will have the opportunity to have more frequent treatments during a longer period of time to get better and stay better. It also means that people on lower incomes can have treatment.

The practitioner treats one person, leaves the needles in to let them work whilst the person relaxes, and then moves on to another patient. As well as the reduced cost, an extra benefit of multibed clinics is the community spirit that emerges when several people are treated together.

Obviously, treating more people in the same space, may impact on patient privacy during treatment. We have blankets and gowns that can be used and our most frequently used points are on the arms and legs. Please wear loose clothing when you attend the clinic so it is possible to roll up trousers and sleeves. The vast majority of patients feel very comfortable receiving acupuncture in this setting. If we think you need one-to-one treatment for whatever reason we will let you know.

First Appointment
The intake process involves completing three forms: a Registration Form, a Health History Questionnaire, and an Intake and Consent Form. We will give you these to fill out when you arrive to the clinic. Your acupuncturist will then speak to you on a one to one basis and discuss why you have come for a treatment and what we might be able to do for you. This appointment will last up tp 1.5 hours as we need to know about different aspects of your life in order to treat the root of the cause and not just your symptoms.

Treatments
Acupuncture

Traditional acupuncture is a healthcare system based on ancient principles which go back nearly two thousand years. It is still used extensively in hospitals in China alongside western medicine.

Traditional Chinese medicine explains acupuncture as a technique for balancing the flow of energy known as qi to flow through meridians in the body. This is done by inserting extremely thin needles into specific points along these meridians. The underlying principle of treatment is that illness and pain occur when the body’s Qi/natural energy cannot flow freely. There may be many reasons for this; emotional and physical stress, poor nutrition, infection and injury are the most common. The overall aim of acupuncture treatment is to restore the body and mind to a natural balance.

Western practitioners view the acupuncture points as places to stimulate nerves, muscles and connective tissue. Some believe that this stimulation boosts your body's natural painkillers and increases blood flow. From a Western medical perspective we know that acupuncture releases endorphins which are nature's pain relieving messengers. Acupuncture has become particularly well known for pain relief and in the field of fertility and IVF. There is a growing body of evidence to support the anecdotal claims associated with this treatment. The British Acupuncture Council compiles and provides all the latest research and evidence-based facts on acupuncture (www.acupuncture.org.uk).

Many people are anxious about the use of needles during treatment. The needles used during acupuncture are very fine and not like the type you will have experienced when having a blood test for example. Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of very fine, single use, sterile needles into specific points of the body in order to allow Qi/natural energy to flow around the body. The majority of people find the treatment very relaxing and leave the treatment room feeling calm.

The British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) has a membership of around 3,000 professionally qualified acupuncturists. It is the UK's largest professional/ self-regulatory body for the practice of traditional acupuncture. Their website contains factsheets for over 60 conditions (www.acupuncture.org.uk) and provide summaries of research and how acupuncture may be beneficial. You should always consult your GP if you have any concerns or talk to a BAcC registered acupuncturist.
