Sports Massage

Sports Massage Therapy is a form of deep tissue massage carried out by a professional who has a thorough understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the muscular and skeletal systems of the body.It aims to improve the suppleness and flexibility of muscles and joints by eliminate toxins embedded in muscle fibres, minimize scar tissue build up and remove adhesions. It can also improve circulation which enhances cell nutrition, and reduce the recovery time of damaged or stressed tissues.

How does Sports Massage differ from other types of therapeutic massage?

Some of the basic techniques in sports massage can be the same as those used in other forms of therapeutic massage, but the therapist may apply the techniques more deeply and firmly. Some sports massage techniques are designed to shift an old or chronic injury back into its acute stage, to trigger the body's natural healing process to complete the process of repair. An example of this is the use of friction techniques, which involves applying deep pressure to tissues repeatedly, to break down fibrous adhesions and or to soften scar tissue.

When should I have a Sports Massage?

Sports Massage Therapy is of great benefit in any case of repetitive strain or muscle overuse injury. This may be due to frequent or intense sports training, or for the non athlete, even an unaccustomed bout of intense gardening or D.I.Y!

For the sports person a Sports Massage is a great advantage

Prior to a sports event to enhance optimal performance - by stimulating the circulation, calming nervous tension, and improve flexibility.
After a sports event to relieve soreness and assist with the removal of lactic acid and other waste products.
During training to deal with existing injuries, and to allow you to train to your full potential and recover optimally.

Medical Acupuncture

Medical acupuncture is a therapeutic modality involving the insertion of fine needles; it is an adaptation of Chinese acupuncture using current knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology, and the principles of evidence based medicine.

Can acupuncture be used to treat my problem?

There is very good scientific evidence showing that acupuncture can help with short term relief of knee, neck and low back pain, and tension type headaches and migraine. It has also been shown to relieve nausea and vomiting in some situations. For other problems, there is little good scientific evidence that we can rely on because not enough good quality research work has been done. The commonest reason to try acupuncture is to treat painful problems.

Acupuncture can be used to treat a range of conditions and practitioners often vary enormously in the kind of conditions they are happy to treat. So, whether acupuncture can help you can only really be decided after discussion. As a general guide, if you are suffering from pain, acupuncture may well help to improve your pain depending on the area.

Results can never be guaranteed. Some people react very well to acupuncture while other people notice little change. In addition, some patients notice that acupuncture promotes relaxation, and results in a feeling of improved wellbeing. Many find that they feel better after acupuncture treatment, even if, unfortunately, there is no real improvement in their medical condition.

Why choose a medical acupuncturist?

Acupuncture may be very useful in improving symptoms you experience, such as pain. However, although acupuncture may help you to feel better, acupuncture will not cure a serious underlying problem, such as serious lung disease, heart disease, tumours or cancers, for example. It is, therefore, important that you continue to seek normal medical advice and continue with essential medical treatment. A medical acupuncturist will be able to discuss your medical problems with you, will understand the results of medical tests you have had, and will understand what medication you are taking and why. He or she can advise you on whether you need to consult your own doctor, and will be able to discuss your case with your own doctor, with your permission and when necessary.
