What is it?

The Alexander Technique teaches conscious control of the body and mind. We use our bodies daily for both simple and complex activities, but rarely give a thought to how. The body is an incredible machine designed to work well without our conscious instruction. Unfortunately, the way we live today encourages us to develop habits that the body is not able to cope with (we are not designed to sit at a desk for hours on end, or on a sofa). Over time, through repetition and lack of attention, these habits cannot help but impinge on our well-being. This can manifest itself in a wide variety of physical and mental problems.

With the Alexander Technique we learn about how we are using our bodies in everyday life. Only by discovering our own habits can we begin to control them. By stripping away the layers of 'mis-use' we can allow our bodies to work in the way that was intended,

To learn in great detail what we are doing is to have to the possibility of change, and to have control over the outcome of everything we do.

Who is it for?

EVERYONE

Anyone can benefit from a series of Alexander Technique lessons. It really is about getting the best out of yourself. Whatever you are doing, the Alexander Technique can help you learn to do it better.

People generally come through one of these three areas-
  • Pain and posture
  • Stress
  • Performance
When we feel something is out of our hands, we are helpless to do anything but complain about it. The Alexander Technique is about taking responsibility for ourselves, realising that even though we may not be able to change what we do in life, we can change how we do it.

What happens in a lesson?

Everybody has a personal pattern of use that they take with them into every movement. If your lower back is over-arched when you play tennis, it is over-arched when you are doing the washing up, when you drive, and when you are on the phone to a friend. For this reason, although people often come for lessons with a specific problem, we rarely spend a lot of time on that one thing. We are looking at the person as a whole, and the habits that you take with you into everything you do.

Lessons contain 3 main elements:
  • Observation of our habits in ordinary movements,
  • Learning about anatomy to better understand how the body works,
  • Learning to stop the habits we have discovered, to allow the body to work in a balanced, natural and free way.

Lesson Structure

It is important to have lessons weekly as we are trying to change some very strong habits, and the longer you go between lessons the harder it is to remember to think about them.

Lessons are about 30 minutes, with the first one being longer as there is more to cover.

There is no set number of lessons, though it is a good idea to plan for ten and see how it goes from there.
