Therapies
Clinical (Evidence-Based) Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy enables you to harness the immense power of your own mind for your own positive wellbeing. Contrary to myths of "mind control", hypnosis is a natural state of focused awareness in which you become more responsive to suggestions, both your own and those of the therapist - but only those you choose to accept! With cognitive-behavioural (evidence-based) hypnotherapy, you and the therapist work together to decide on what is best for you and you take an active role in your therapy. You learn to use your mental powers for you own greater benefit, while the therapist uses her expertise and skills to guide your progress and facilitate the therapeutic process. You are in control at all times and you decide what your therapy goals are. The "down-side" is that this is no "magic pill" - you will need to take responsibility for your own health and progress and put in a certain amount of "work" for yourself. So this is not for someone looking for a "quick-fix" and expecting the therapist to "fix" them. The up-side is that it will be immensely rewarding and will provide you with skills you can transfer to many areas of your life, giving you a greater sense of self-confidence and self-efficacy.
Reiki / Energy Healing
Reiki is an ancient Japanese energy healing therapy that uses light touch and sensitive energy attunement by the therapist to balance the body’s energy field and stimulate the body’s own self-healing processes. During a therapy session, you will be guided into a comfortable and deeply relaxed state via relaxation techniques and guided imagery. The therapist then moves around your body sensing your energy and using light touch where appropriate to guide and balance the healing process. Reiki is both powerful and gentle, and will support the effectiveness of other types of therapy or treatment. Reiki can facilitate healing on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels, improve energy levels, support and strengthen the immune system, help manage and reduce stress, and support recovery after illness.
Stress Reduction & Relaxation Therapy
Deep relaxation is a scientifically recognised physiological state different from sleep, meditation or hypnosis, in which the mind and emotions are stilled and the body is able to release tension and allow innate healing processes to become active. During a session, you will be guided into a comfortable and deeply relaxed state through relaxation techniques, guided mental imagery and positive suggestions. However, you remain awake and fully in control throughout. Deep relaxation (described in the 1970s by Dr H Benson and colleagues, of Harvard Medical School, as the "relaxation response") is the physiological opposite of the "fight-or-flight" response. It allows respite from the ever-active sympathetic nervous system and enables the parasympathetic nervous system (responsible for rest, repair, recuperation and nurturing of the body and mind) to exert itself more effectively. It is probably the most vital factor in the healing process.
Emotional Freedom Techniques, EFT
(Energy Meridian Therapy, Energy Psychology)
This sophisticated therapy recognises the links between emotions, thought processes, energy flows in the body, and physical and mental health. EFT involves activation of specific energy points and meridians (by gentle tapping on acupressure points with the fingers), combined with modern psychological techniques (which access subconscious memories and integrate right and left brain functions). It does not involve going into a trance or hypnotic state, massage or physical manipulation. You remain awake and fully in control throughout. EFT helps to release negative mental conditioning, sources of inferiority, negative emotions (eg. guilt, anger, fear), emotional “baggage”, phobias, addictions, hang-ups, traumas, anxieties, and other triggers of stress that prevent us from living and enjoying life to the full. Since many physical health problems are linked to underlying emotional issues or stress, EFT can often help alleviate these too.
Integrated Energy Therapy
A comprehensive and multi-modal approach to natural healing and wellbeing, which recognises that each of us is different and has individual issues/problems, needs and preferences. Treatment is tailored individually to suit.
All traditional and holistic healing methods recognise that there are several components involved in the natural healing process, which include:
* Release of stress and tension from the body and mind in order to calm "busy" thought processes, reduce physical discomfort and increase receptiveness to healing;
* Identification and release of negative emotional patterns to prevent recurrence of dis-ease; and
* Balancing, re-aligning and enhancing of the subtle energy of the body/mind, allowing the innate healing mechanisms of the body/mind to reassert themselves.
Integrated Energy Therapy addresses these various elements by incorporating the following:
1) Stress reduction and relaxation;
2) Emotional freedom techniques (EFT) / energy psychology;
3) Reiki / energy healing.
The recommended approach is to have an initial consultation session in which your needs are discussed and you can receive a short session of Reiki (energy healing) combined with an experience of deep relaxation (see Benson, H, MD, "The Relaxation Response", 1975). Subsequent sessions may then involve either EFT (emotional freedom techniques/energy psychology) or Reiki followed by or combined with relaxation.
Depending on individual needs, techniques drawn from the following may also be offered or recommended:
- Bodywork therapies;
- Techniques drawn from hatha yoga;
- Stress management techniques.

Relaxation Skills Training
The experience of deep relaxation is beneficial not only for the almost immediate feeling of enhanced wellbeing and the proven health benefits to body and mind, but it also begins a process whereby you experience (possibly for the very first time) the “relaxation response”, which is actually a very natural state that has become all but lost in our present day lives. The more often you experience this state, the more it becomes a natural habit for your body and mind, and the more and more easily you will be able to elicit it – a continuing spiral of positive wellbeing! The aims of relaxation skills training are to help you fully experience deep relaxation (the “relaxation response”), learn how to elicit relaxation consciously and under your own control, and then be able to apply this skill in “real-world” situations that in the past have been sources of anxiety or stress, in order to counteract and overcome these habitual negative experiences.
Meditation & Mindfulness
Experience and practice of a range of techniques for stilling the mind. For stress reduction, improved concentration, enhanced physical, mental and emotional health, positive wellbeing and personal development. Practices include relaxation techniques, breath control techniques (pranayama), imagery, concentration techniques, chakra awareness, mantras, chanting, mindfulness, affirmations, self-healing practices and guided meditations.
Stress Awareness & Management
This may involve an in-depth assessment of your stress levels and main sources of stress; effects of stress and relaxation on the body and mind; stress reduction/management techniques; and/or instruction in relaxation techniques. If helpful, you can also receive guidance on developing an individually tailored stress management action plan.

QUALIFICATION DETAILS Amanda Jackson-Russell originally trained as a medical scientist and has spent many years researching and writing on medical and health-related topics. Also holding life-long interests in spirituality, mind-body medicine and holistic healing, she began training both as a healer and as a yoga teacher in the mid-1980s. Subsequently, she has trained in Reiki, hypnotherapy, Western massage, acupressure, aromatherapy, stress management and energy meridian therapy (emotional freedom techniques, EFT). Amanda sees herself primarily as a facilitator and communicator of self-healing. Her approach as a therapist is to tailor treatment to individual needs to help a person on whatever level is most appropriate to them to facilitate their personal development and self-healing processes.
