About - Shannon Maybin

Why do I do what I do?

My name is Shannon Maybin and I am a qualified adult nurse (Bsc Hons Adult Nursing) through the University of Ulster. I am also qualified in the Bowen Technique through ECBS and a member of the Federation of Holistic Therapists. I have been nursing for over 8 years in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast. I thoroughly enjoyed learning and gaining experience within cardiology and was fortunate enough to get my first post in Cardiac Catheterisation Theatres. I felt I needed more experience within my field so I made my way to CSICU and then in Cardiac Theatres.

My learning and experiences have lead me to my fascination of the human body. How we move, how we function, how our organs work in harmony and how sometimes unfortunate health can lead you to hospitalisation. It is a marvel how the body can recover from ill health and how with the correct amount of knowledge, assistance and will power we can aid it in its recovery.

Complimentary and alternative therapies have always been an interest to me. I always loved receiving the benefits of them but never had the courage to study them. However, a personal injury lead me investigate further into the world of alternative health. I had a Bowen treatment within weeks of my injury followed by a further two. It changed my life to say the least. So much so that I now carry the title of a Bowen Technique therapist and very proud of it!

Rediscover yourself and take a step forward to a healthier, happier you!

I look forward to hearing from you.

What Is Bowen?

What is it?

The Bowen Technique originates from Geelong, Australia. Developed by Thomas Ambrose Bowen (1916-1982).

It is a non-invasive, gentle, remedial hands on therapy.
It is a form of fascial release technique (soft connective tissue), using rolling type movements over particular areas of the body such as muscles, tendons and ligaments to stimulate the body's own healing responses.

When the body becomes under stress or tension, whether it be muscular like 'back pain', stiffness, poor posture, trauma and emotional it can lead to all kinds of symptoms such as pain, headaches, poor sleep, respiratory, digestive problems to name a few.
Its aim is to aid in the healing of the body by allowing and enabling the body to become 'relaxed'. It is in this parasympathetic state that the body is able to heal itself and help you on your journey to repair, rejuvenate and relax.

During the treatment short breaks are given in between the moves. This allows the body to communicate to the brain via the nervous system and start your journey.

Who can be treated?

Bowen is a complementary approach to health and well-being.
Aiming to treat YOU as an individual and not JUST your symptoms.

The Bowen Technique can be performed on young babies to the elderly person and is a beneficial method of preventive health care.

Testimonials

"In the past 11 years I have tried so many different medications, diets and treatments including aromatherapy, kinesiology, homeopathy, reflexology and reiki.
In 2011, when Shannon told me about Bowen, my M.E. had improved as I had learned to manage the condition but the IBS was really affecting my quality of life. Shannon was so enthusiastic about Bowen I decided to give it a go and I'm glad I did.
I noticed an improvement during the first treatment and by the following year my IBS symptoms had gone and stayed away for 2 years!
Just a few months ago I had a flare up of IBS, M.E. and also developed a pain in my neck and shoulders. I knew I had been pushing myself too much and my body was starting to complain so I had a Bowen treatment. After just one treatment all 3 problems had been helped and I had the added bonus that my sleep was improved too.
This is a gentle, relaxing but above all beneficial treatment that I highly recommend."

Lee-Ann, 34 M.E since 2003 IBS since 2006 (September 2014)

"Had my second session last night. What a big difference it has made to my life. My body has been through the wars over the years. Thanks to Shannon at Slemish Treatment Room its been like a new lease of life."
