SERVICES
About Us

The Natural Practice is a long established, patient centred, complementary medical practice. Founded by Dr David Owen in Winchester 1982, we now have practices in London, Oxford. Bournemouth and Poole, Basingstoke and Chichester. For contact details and opening hours, please view the individual web page for each practice.

Dr Owen and his team of doctors and medically qualified health practitioners, offer a holistic approach to all aspects of medicine suitable for the very young through to the elderly. We see patients suffering from a wide range of illnesses, from those presenting with acute conditions to those needing to manage chronic disease and pain. Practitioners use a number of approaches and work collectively to offer a patient fully integrated medical care. The medicines and remedies prescribed can work alongside conventional medical treatment.

Our website offers much information about the therapies we offer which include homeopathy (practiced by medical doctors), osteopathy, cranial osteopathy, nutritional therapy, hypnotherapy, acupuncture and both Chinese herbal medicine and western herbal medicine, and the conditions the patients we see present with. However, if you need more information than our website provides, or if you wish to speak to a practitioner about a condition or concern, please do not hesitate to contact the practice on 01962 856310 or email [email protected] and our experienced reception team will be happy to help.

General Patient Information

How to make an appointment

Please telephone the practice and a member of our reception team will be able to advise you which practitioner it is best for you to consult with first and their availability. They will advise you on first appointment length, fee rates and the information they require you to bring with you at your first appointment and send you any questionnaire that needs completing before your consultation. Questionnaires can be emailed to you or you can access them through our Patient Resources area on the Home page. You may be asked to give credit card details to secure your appointment.

What to expect at your first appointment

You will be asked to complete a questionnaire, usually before your consultation, giving a full medical history. This will give the doctor or practitioner more time to talk through your symptoms and medical history to gain a full understanding of your condition. We are happy for you to have a relative or friend with you during your consultation. An adult must accompany patients under the age of 18.

If remedies or medicines are prescribed, you may have to wait to have them made up if you wish to take them away with you following your consultation. Alternatively, items may be posted out to you later that day. Postage charges will apply.

Payment

Payment should be made for consultation fees and remedies at the time of your appointment. We accept all major credit cards (except American Express), cash and cheques.

Appointment Cancellation Policy

We require 48 hours notice for a cancellation of your first consultation. If we do not receive adequate notice, 25% of your first consultation fee will be charged to your credit card.

We also require 48 hours notice for cancellations of all follow-up appointment. If sufficient notice is not given or if an appointment with one of the practitioners is missed, 50% of the consultation fee will be charged. This fee may be wavered under exceptional personal circumstances.

Telephone Consultations

A telephone consultation may be made by arrangement if you are unable to visit the practice. Any remedies or medicines prescribed will be posted out to you.

Private Health Insurance

Many of our practitioners are providers of private health care. Please check your private health insurance policy to ensure you have cover before you make an appointment. We ask patients to pay the practice following their consultation and to then claim reimbursement directly from their insurance provider. The Natural Practice will be happy to provide invoices and receipts.

What is Integrated Health

An integrated approach to treating a patient takes into account the individual's diet, environmental factors including lifestyle, toxicity and sensitivity, and their family, social and personal relationships. It considers the role of different interventions (conventional and complementary) and considers how these interact. It always considers the impact of illness and treatment on the mind and body with an understanding of well-being that explicitly seeks to support a patient towards balance and health as a dynamic and whole state.

An integrated approach to patient treatment enhances the contribution from a number of different treatment approaches including conventional and complementary medical treatments. It involves considering aspects of treatment and care from many different perspectives, such as thinking what a particular set of symptoms might be trying to communicate to a patient or asking what changes does a person need to make in order to no longer need their symptoms to function. It may call for a different relationship between doctor and patient with the doctor holding the role of not just the dispenser of cures but the facilitator to empower the patient's own healing potential.

Many doctors and complementary practitioners focus on just one intervention but it is often how different advice and treatments are integrated that make a difference in shifting deep and chronic diseases. Most commonly in the UK the focus of conventional treatment is on the prescribing of pharmaceuticals or the use of surgery. Indeed as these have become increasingly the dominant interventions, they are seen increasingly as the only meaningful interventions. It is like the saying, ‘If the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail!’

One aspect of an integrated approach is recognizing that the whole is more than the sum of the parts and a holistic approach both tries to perceive the different aspects of an individual and understand how each influences the others. When working holistically we see an intimate connection between a patient’s emotional sensitivity and mental function and their physical and bodily structure including the diseases they have or are susceptible to.

Therapies

The Natural practice offers a holistic approach to all aspects of medicine for young and old. The different therapies offered by the practice can work alone or alongside each other to provide the most effective treatment for the patient.

We assess each individual case and will work on a treatment plan which is specific to your requirements.

Our treatments and remedies work alongside any standard medical treatment and we will also liaise with your GP if necessary and with your permission.

Medical Conditions

At The Natural Practice we see patients suffering from a wide range of different medical conditions. We always attempt to treat patients with a personalised treatment plan and individualise the treatment as much as possible. However, we recognise that many patients want to know a bit more about specific medical conditions and the treatment options available. The integrated medical approach might use one of a number of different treatment approaches in compiling a treatment plan. In his homeopathic text book The Principle and Practice of Homeopathy (published by Elsevier Ltd ISBN No. 0-443-10089-6), Dr David Owen explores the different sorts of acute and chronic patients presented for complementary medical treatment and in many cases, part of the reasons they do so is because conventional treatment has either failed or been incomplete or has had adverse effects. In some cases, no conventional treatment has been available.
