The Holistic Road to Health

How It Works

Prior to any treatment, we will hold an in-depth consultation, taking into account your medical history, diet, all aspects of your lifestyle and how the various systems of the body function. Once all factors have been established, we may prescribe a combination of remedies including acupuncture, Chinese massage, herbal tonics or dietary advice to stimulate the body’s own healing powers. All treatment takes place in a serene, safe and comfortable environment.

About Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient system of healing which has been practised in China and other Far Eastern countries for thousands of years. It can be used to treat a wide variety of illnesses and conditions – from infertility, IBS, cancer and arthritis to migraines, stress and even addictions such as smoking.

Treatment involves the use of very fine needles and can produce rapid results, but more often it requires a number of sessions, usually at weekly intervals. An increasing number of Western medical research trials now acknowledge the clinical value of Acupuncture.

Treatments We Use

At the Clinic of Traditional Chinese Medicine we use a number of different techniques to treat a wide range of conditions.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a wonderfully natural system of healthcare which can bring about lasting improvements to our health. It can be a very positive force for change and helps us achieve a more balanced way of living.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is based on the philosophy that vital energy known as ‘Qi’ (pronounced chee) runs through the body just as rivers flow across the earth. The Qi flows through channels known as ‘meridians’, each one corresponding to a different organ. Qi consists of equal and opposite qualities or forces – Yin and Yang – and when these become unbalanced or the energy flow is restricted in some way, illness may result.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles into specific points along the meridians. This helps to encourage and manipulate the flow of Qi by unblocking and moving, or by redirecting the Qi to where it is needed most.

This approach can restore the healthy functioning of the body and lead to a more permanent resolution of the problem, even when western medicine hasn’t been effective.

Acupressure (Acupuncture without needles)

Acupressure aims to regulate the flow of Qi in the body by applying light pressure with the fingers and thumbs to specific points along the energy channels. It’s often described as ‘Acupuncture without needles’.

By holding points in a specific sequence, energy and blood circulation can be increased where it is lacking or dispersed where it is overactive, restoring balance in the body. As a result, pain and discomfort is eliminated and underlying disorders progressively resolve.

Some people prefer a firm, strong pressure, especially in areas where muscles are tight, while others prefer a lighter touch. Our practitioner can adjust the amount of pressure to suit your personal preference.

....................................................................

Tui Na Structural Massage Therapy

Tui Na Structural Massage therapy is a hands-on body treatment that use Chinese Taoist and martial art principles to stretch the muscle tissue and stimulate lymph and blood circulation.

Tui Na includes the use of rigorous hand techniques (brushing, kneading, rubbing, rolling and pressing) to massage the soft tissue (muscles and tendons) of the body and the use of motion and traction on acupressure points to establish a more harmonious flow of Qi in the body.

It is particularly effective for relieving acute and chronic structural pain, as well as many non-muscoloskeletal conditions. The patient may be seated or laid on a treatment couch/bed, whichever position they find most comfortable.

....................................................................

Auricular Therapy

Auricular therapy is based on the theory that different parts of the body have a reflex association with specific points on the auricle of the ear. It works by applying stimulation to these points to treat pain, balance emotions, detoxify, and balance hormones.

Acupressure pellets are used to maintain continuous pressure on a reflex point on the ear to achieve effective and lasting results in the corresponding part of the body. These pellets may be held in place by tape for three to five days.

....................................................................

Chinese Cupping

Chinese Cupping is an age old tradition with many modern uses. Specially designed suction cups are placed on the skin right above whatever muscle or part of the body is blocked or in pain.

The cups work to improve circulation, relieve stiffness and release stagnant energy in the body by drawing toxins away from the affected area towards the skin’s surface. Sometimes a cup can be placed where an acupuncture needle has already been applied to the afflicted part of the body.

....................................................................

Herbal Medicine

Unlike western medications which tend to mask symptoms rather than correct the underlying cause, Chinese herbs are selected to address both acute symptoms and the patient’s underlying condition.

Depending on your ailment, our practitioner may prescribe medicine in the form of herbal teas, pills, powders or creams. These are usually free from unwanted side effects.
