Shingles is caused by the herpes zoster virus that affects the nerve ends in the skin. It is characterized by pain and itching lesions. Symptoms of shingles includes a painful, blistering rash, swollen eyelids, redness and pain (if in the eyes), and localized pain or itching on the body.
