Heartburn is a burning feeling in the lower chest along with a sour or bitter taste in the throat and mouth. Despite its name, it does not affect the heart. It usually occurs after a meal or while lying down and can last anywhere from minutes to hours. Symptoms of heartburn include a burning feeling in the chest behind the sternum, a burning feeling in the throat, a sour or bitter taste in the mouth, difficulty swallowing, burping, chronic coughing, a hoarseness or loss of voice for no apparent reason, wheezing, and spitting up after almost every meal in babies. Treatment options include medication, antacids, changing the diet to avoid trigger foods, surgery, homoeopathy, herbal remedies, and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
