Underactive Thyroid and Super Greens

If you have an underactive thyroid, you may have been told that you have to take special medications or undergo certain measures in order to balance it and get it working as it should. In some cases, you may not need to take medications as super greens can help a lot with an underactive thyroid. Read on for more information.

What is an Underactive Thyroid?

An underactive thyroid is a problem that occurs when the thyroid does not make enough thyroid hormones. It can cause such things as weight gain, headaches, fatigue, a loss of appetite, constipation, depression, and a swollen goitre. These are common symptoms and as such, you may not relate them to a thyroid problem but if you are suffering from one or more of these, a simple blood test will tell you if an underactive thyroid is the problem.

How do Super Greens Help?

Super greens are a type of food that contains a huge amount of beneficial nutrients such as vitamins, trace minerals, macro minerals, essential fatty acids, protein, nucleic acids, micro nutrients, chlorophyll and a vast array of phytochemicals. Two of the main ingredients in most super greens include chlorella and spirulina but other greens include kelp, seaweed, alfalfa, wheat grass, barley, amongst others.

Kelp is one of the ingredients in super greens that is really beneficial to people that suffer from an underactive thyroid. This is because of its high iodine content. A lack of iodine can contribute to underactivity in the thyroid as iodine is necessary for the body to be able to produce thyroid hormones. Kelp and seaweed can help to regulate the thyroid so that it is balanced and producing the correct amount of thyroid hormones once again. This in turns helps to alleviate the symptoms of the underactive thyroid such as a sluggish metabolism and weight gain.

However, if you have been diagnosed with an over active thyroid, you should be very careful about taking super greens as you may in fact end up causing more problems with yourself. Always consult with a doctor before starting to take super greens in order to make sure that they will not cause any negative effect to you.
